Stephens III was a remarkable young man whose life tragically ended in 2008 at the age of 25. The impact of how he lived has been an inspiration to so many who have heard his story. His desire to love and serve others radiated from an unforgettable smile and a deep compassion which he freely gave to those around him. One friend provided this observation: "Fred accepted all of us for who we are, and instilled in us the faith that we all need in ourselves to carry on. He blazed a trail through this world, while blessing countless hearts along the way." Another wrote, "Your heartfelt words of encouragement and support of my ambitions meant more to me than you will ever know. I will dedicate future projects and endeavors to your memory."Scores of others echoed these sentiments and were deeply impacted by his friendship. Fred embodied leadership in life. His legacy is being lived out today in the lives of young people who knew him and were drawn to his zest for life. Inspiring Student Leadership Fred's family and friends established the Frederick Stephens III Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of his life and in his spirit. The fund is dedicated to investing in future young leaders academically and through public service. As befits the ideals of the person it honors, the scholarship recipients are a diverse group of people with exceptional dedication and commitment to their communities, fellow students and personal academic excellence.Fred recognized the importance of having mentors involved in his life and sought out those in leadership who openly encouraged future young leaders. He was inspired by those who aspired to make an impact through their vocation and saw the results of serving those in need.
